Disassembly

Remove the 3 screws on the bottom of the device and the two screws on the inside right side, then carefully pry the pieces apart. This is not easy.

Root Access

This device can be sent commands via ACP_Commander using the -c option, A shell-like interface is also available using the "-s" option.

Telnet

an actual root shell over telnet can be accessed by doing the following (requires the latest version of acp_commander):

  • Download the armhf busybox-static package from Debian
 wget http://security.debian.org/debian-security/pool/updates/main/b/busybox/busybox-static_1.22.0-9+deb8u4_armhf.deb 
  • Extract the package and copy busybox to the same directory as acp_commander
 dpkg -x busybox-static_1.22.0-9+deb8u4_armhf.deb .
 cp bin/busybox .
  • Use acp_commander to copy busybox to /tmp on the device
 java -jar acp_commander.jar -t 192.168.1.142 -xfer busybox -xferto /tmp
  • use acp_commander to blank the root password and start telnet
 java -jar acp_commander.jar -t 192.168.1.142 -o  

You should now be able to login as "root" via telnet. This method needs to be repeated if the device is restarted.

SSH

@Gogoli discovered you can also just the ssh daemon on the device with the following:

 java -jar acp_commander -jar -t 192.168.1.142 -c "/etc/init.d/ssh.bak start" 

If needed you can wipe out the root password with:

 java -jar acp_commander.jar -t 192.168.1.142 -o

Custom Firmware/Operating System installation

  • Create a Debian armhf image and write it to a USB drive using the process found here:

https://github.com/1000001101000/Debian_on_Buffalo/wiki/Alternate-install-method-via-debootstrap-script

  • Connect the usb drive to the device, reboot the device to ensure the drive is detected (probably unnecessary).
  • Use ACP Commander to verify that the device automounts the drive to /home/USB/usbdisk1

if not you can try to manually mount it to either /home/USB/usbdisk1 or /mnt/android

  • Mount proc,sys and dev for the image

  • start the ssh daemon inside the image

  • You can now connect to the Debian image via ssh and run basically anything you want. The last 2 steps need to be repeated after a reboot.

Firmware Notes

The "recovery" image provided by Buffalo and the standard install image are the same file packaged with different instructions (at least for version 4.50).
